Kidney Mitzvah

"Israel's remarkable new steps to solve its organ shortage."

I could get behind the idea of giving a token sum to an organ donor's family to memorialize the donor after death. I am strongly behind the idea that if you are willing to be an organ donor after death and you need an organ transplant during your life, you should get some small advantage over someone who isn't willing. I want my organs to go to someone who cared enough to leave their very best, too. But, if you are the sickest person at the time the organs become available for you, you get them with no questions asked. Not because you are famous or rich or know the right people in the right places. Because you need them and someone you will never meet cared enough to make you a gift you can't repay. Get registered as an organ donor on your driver's license. Talk to your family about your decision.
